To comprehensively implement the fundamental task of moral education, deepen the tutor-student engagement mechanism, enhance interactions between tutors and students, and inspire students to strive for excellence, the fifth “Inspiring Wisdom, Forging Ahead; Supporting Growth” Tutor-Student Lunch Meeting of Kuang Yaming Honors School was successfully held at Conference Room C211 in Panqi Building on February 28, 2025.
For this event, Professor Du Lingjie, a 2008 alumnus of Kuang Yaming Honors School, professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Physics, Nanjing University, was specially invited to share his scientific research with over 20 students from the same academic year and major. The event was attended by Zhou Yuan, the Secretary of the Party Committee of Kuang Yaming Honors School; Zou Dawei, Assistant to the Dean; and Counselor Si Linmin. The lunch meeting was hosted by Zhou An, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Kuang Yaming Honors School.
To further advance research-oriented education and support the cultivation of top-tier innovative talents for the school, a research tutor appointment ceremony was held during the lunch meeting. Zhou Yuan, the Secretary of the Party Committee of Kuang Yaming Honors School, presented the official appointment certificate to Professor Du Lingjie.
During the sharing session of the lunch meeting, Professor Du Lingjie delivered a captivating academic lecture on recent experimental progress in the fractional quantum Hall effect. Introducing the topic through concepts such as gravitons, quasiparticles in condensed matter, and quantum gravity, he elaborated on the significance and cutting-edge nature of this research field. Professor Du emphasized that the fractional quantum Hall effect is a frontier topic in modern condensed matter physics, characterized by its unique properties arising from electron correlation effects, which lead to the emergence of topological order. This phenomenon has attracted extensive experimental research, particularly regarding the topological properties of fermionic fractional quantum Hall states. Lastly, he presented the latest experimental progress in InAs/GaSb double-layer quantum wells.
Throughout his lecture, Professor Du engaged students with fascinating stories of scientists, vivid images, and accessible explanations, guiding them through the development of physics from its origins to the quantum physics underpinning modern technology. He covered topics such as superconductors, semiconductors, topological insulators, and quantum computing, explaining complex quantum physics concepts in an easy-to-understand manner while highlighting their profound impact on the world.
At the end of the lecture, students actively discussed with Professor Du, raising questions about experimental details of the fractional quantum Hall effect, advancements in bosonic systems, and other related topics.
The fifth “Inspiring Wisdom, Forging Ahead; Supporting Growth” Tutor-Student Lunch Meeting not only provided a valuable platform for learning and communication between tutors and students but also offered guidance for students in their academic and research pursuits. The event concluded successfully, leaving participants with valuable insights and inspiration. Moving forward, Kuang Yaming Honors School will remain committed to its mission of moral education, continuously hosting the “Three Rooms and One Hall” series activities, upholding a student-centered educational philosophy, and building more bridges for communication between the school and students to support their holistic development.
